Nasality Detection in EMG-based Speech Interfaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nasality is a very important characteristic of several languages, especially European Portuguese. This paper addresses the challenge of nasality detection in EMG-based speech interfaces. By combining EMG data with real time imaging information, we explore the existence of useful information on the EMG data about the velum movement. Results indicate that is possible to “detect” zones of nasality, particularly by sensors positioned below the ear between the mastoid process and the mandible. By conducting an exploratory classification experiment, accuracy rates as high as 79.6% have been achieved for nasal vowel detection, paving the way for the development of an EMG-based speech interface for languages with strong nasal characteristics.

Detecting Nasal Vowels in Speech Interfaces Based on Surface Electromyography
Nasality is a very important characteristic of several languages, European Portuguese being one of them. This paper addresses the challenge of nasality detection in surface electromyography (EMG) based speech interfaces. We explore the existence of useful information about the velum movement and also assess if muscles deeper down in the face and neck region can be measured using surface electro...
متن کاملVelum Movement Detection based on Surface Electromyography for Speech Interface
Conventional speech communication systems do not perform well in the absence of an intelligible acoustic signal. Silent Speech Interfaces enable speech communication to take place with speech-handicapped users and in noisy environments. However, since no acoustic signal is available, information on nasality may be absent, which is an important and relevant characteristic of several languages, p...
متن کاملData Selection with Kurtosis and Nasality Features for Speaker Recognition
We propose new data selection approaches based on speaker discriminability features, including kurtosis and a set of nasality features which exploit spectral properties of nasal speech sounds. Data selected based on the speaker discriminability features are used to implement end-to-end speaker recognition systems, which produce significant improvements when combined with the baseline system (wh...
متن کاملSynthesizing speech from electromyography using voice transformation techniques
Surface electromyography (EMG) can be used to record the activation potentials of articulatory muscles while a person speaks. This technique could enable silent speech interfaces, as EMG signals are generated even when people pantomime speech without producing sound. Having effective silent speech interfaces would enable a number of compelling applications, allowing people to communicate in are...
متن کاملImpact of different speaking modes on EMG-based speech recognition
We present our recent results on speech recognition by surface electromyography (EMG), which captures the electric potentials that are generated by the human articulatory muscles. This technique can be used to enable Silent Speech Interfaces, since EMG signals are generated even when people only articulate speech without producing any sound. Preliminary experiments have shown that the EMG signa...
